Undeserved success

December 15th 2006 18:03
So there's some people who think that some posts are getting undeserved success.

Personally I think that it's fair that the criterion for being on the popular list is popularity. I don't really see an alternative.

(And, frankly, we all know what posts are going to make it there -- just like we all pretty much know what movies are going to be popular -- and it's not as if the world is going to change much anytime soon.)

But there are various ways to give kudos to posts that deserve it and aren't getting any. Cibby's "Post of the day" blog is an obvious method.

Just taking Cib's idea and running with it... Why don't more people do "post of the day" blogs? Perhaps an open blog of this kind? If you don't like the popular posts list, why not start your own?

There's room for a couple such blogs in the Orble community. And each of them will inevitably have idiosyncratic criteria -- there's many ways to deserve kudos (good writing, entertaining, took a lot of hard work, important issue, interesting discussion, just needs encouragement, etc).

Nice thoughts Adrian, i completely agree with you. Instead of wasting time on who got undeserving popularity, we should spend time creating good contents. Sooner or later it will gain popularity, if only if the post holds good content.

People promote each others blogs? Well it will backlash and turn it into the popular list again.

I don't understand though, the testicles thing was hilarious, the success was justified, the problem with orble is that a few of the members are naive to the ways of the internet. They think the internet is fair, hwich it isn't, they believe there traffic will be decided immediately by the quality of their writing which it doesn't (though in the long run it iwll pay dividends).

What they don't understand is the internets purpouse is to gather and collect information and catalycise (spelling?) this between people who use the net. No more, no less.

Nice saying Ahmed. Hell even the creator isn't fair, how come they expect Internet the technology built by unfair human being would be fair.

But as you said in the long run "quality" does pay, need to be patient that's all. Catalysis --- i guess

Maybe we should have monthly Orble awards: most productive blogger, most improved writer etc to encourage people to raise the levels of their writing

Lame idea I know, but its Saturday and the cricket is on

yeah very lame

There would only be one problem with that, I'd win the awards continuously, no one could stop me! *laughs crazily*

Honestly that would be cool, having a best-of awards for quality writing, heck, maybe we can throw in prize, like erm... a plastic cup

All I do, is if i feel something needs to be referanced, I'll try to referance it within Orble first. Like with my "Should we say Nigger?" post I linked to Cibbys post on Michael Richards outburst, not the news piece

I like the idea of awarding the posts I like best...but really, the only thing we would be doing is...

1. indicating we are superior to the people who are clicking and commenting on the posts that inevitably end up on Orble's current popular list.

2. We are replacing one popular list with another and others will eventually think that the posts on our lists are all our friends or network and therefore unfair.

and 3. If we do this, wouldn't we, by the very foundation this concept is based on, have to read every single post on Orble to determine those that have been overlooked in the past, to determine the actual best post of the day?

I love this concept. But a popular list is a popular list no matter how you look at it. I have often thought about doing my own post of the day before but these issues always stop me.

I don't really have time to do a new 'post of the day' every day... it's a lot of work - I try to read posts from blogs that I dont regularly read, and post them... after all, I want to try and promote new or undiscovered blogs.

I agree with Voices, though - you could make your own popular blogs list, but you probably won't sift through 1000 blogs, and someone will still feel neglected!

I like the blogs that are actually about something, not the ones that resemble livejournal posts.
