The link to a post should not be set by the title of the post by default

Perhaps it's nitpicking but the current system of creating a link to posts can easily create broken link errors.
For instance having a post titled: "Hello" at domain abc.com means by default the post URL would be abc.com/hello/
Now if someone were to change the 'Short Title' accidently or on purpouse that would become a broken link. The issue is overtime these broken links could possibly add up, or after simple edits links can be broken (which could be bad if you were being linked in through a high traffic website, think of the hits!
).
From now on I'm going to make the Short Title a combination of the date and time I published thep ost though I really think it would be good if this was automated, the short title really shouldn't play a roll with the url of the post.
Just my 2 cents.

If you just use the date then it will not work as well.

Back when I didn't have a domain blog, I thought that the numbers emerging at the end of our post URLs meant that there were posts under the same name written previously hence they were there to avoid confusion (just my thought.. I don't know whether it is likewise or not).
Now that I moved to my own domain (yay Charles & Jon!), I thought the post URLs would change. Well, yesterday I made a post about a Radiohead song and there it was that number again.
Worse, I am only recently getting hold of the SEO thing so I renamed my posts a few times so that they would be better recognized by the search engines. The result of this was all my post URLs are ending with various numbers now.
Too many dead links out there from me, I guess? So a part of me is concerned (especially after the Google's supplemental results craze) Would that effect my posts' search results negatively?
