How do you feel about sleeze on Orble?

April 28th 2008 08:55
sleeze on orble

Now just have a look at the pictures on the most popular list, aren't they all visually pleasing? except one which is just straight out sleeze, it's one way of getting votes but I think for any female who resorts to that sort of thing it's absolutely degrading both to its author and to the rest of the decent males and females on Orble.

But what do they do about it? NOTHING.

That is just plain weak, what sort of sight is this? There are plenty of other sites on the net for such rubbish why allow it here and why, as a female, stoop to such tactics, there is no humour in it, none at all, just straight out sleeze.

It would not be acceptable on a lot of other communities I know that and it would not meet the standards of Blog catalogues, many of whom refuse to list such things.

What kind of male would any female attract by this means, a sleeze, of course, and what will she end up with, a sleeze and what will she complain about "she can't get a decent guy" well no wonder.

That image taints those other well conceived, well presented blogs with their great selection of well chosen images which creates a lot of variety.

Of course, there have been others and quite recently and I was turned "off" every time I was confronted with them, I am so glad now that the majority has won and the images are now so good. It is a very good idea, but completely ruined by the images of the like of which to which I am referring.

I dread the thought of the next plague, it is just so revolting.

So, at the risk of getting no comments at all and therefore no votes, I ask you.

How do you feel about sleeze on Orble? Are there any decent people here with sufficient character to stand up and be counted?

I wonder how other readers feel when confronted by it.

The sleezes will really like it of course, but what of the others?

Do you think that they'd just turn on their heels and go?

Apart from anything else it is really juvenile, do some people never grow up, or do they still stay snickering around the school toilets.

Do let me know how you feel. I've let you know how I feel.

I loce nothing better than a good laugh, so if the picture is relevant to an article that is written with the purpose of being humorous then I don't mind. But then again that is only my opinion and I cannot speak for everyone else.

oh sleezy eh??

umm...are we not being a little hypocritical dearest?

Remember this....

Really Long Link

and what did someone respond to your post with....

"The icon you've posted is indicative of current attitudes concerning sexuality; think about what is implied by that image, it's insulting to men...

And it suggests that you sanction that attitude."

careful dear,

your 'slip' is showing...

I have no problem if it's in context or humorous. The blog I think you are referring to was funny and got my attention because of the title and the pic. I did assume it would be tongue in cheek. I don't really find it confronting.

Of course, your point of view is just as relevant as anybody's and you have the right to voice it. The guys at Orble have come up with a great filter now so that you can make the choice on your page if you want certain images to be filtered out so they won't appear on your home page. Hopefully now everyone can be happy.

When I first saw the image Krystal, I wouldn't view the post. Initially, the image and post title were bothersome; however when I read the context of the post, I found it amusing; quite the metaphor of the existing angst concerning gender prejudices and contrasting expectations.

Was it in good taste, aside from the scone recipe, probably not; but, I am very guilty of similar actions, published in the spirit of fun and part of the hyperbole that I use to make or raise a point.

If I knew that my imagery was really bothering folks I would temper them, and in fact have done so. My friend katyzzz pointed out that perhaps I was overdoing the girlie photos and when I objectively looked at my post, I acquiesced.

Will I use a risque photo in the future to make a point, probably. I don't know what Morgan was thinking when she made her choices, but what she did suggest that turn about was fair play.

So, I for one, will wait to see how her future posts go before I etch anything in stone.

Do I like sleeze? The answer is NO; but whose definition shall we use?

Some peoples' sleaze is other peoples' art. The whole matter is way too subjective to debate.

In a free (read: self-regulated) society, we agree to respect one anothers' feelings and rights to a reasonable extent; if the pic offends you, move on. It's not like it's popping right up in your face, right?
If that pic popped up full page no matter what page I opened on Orble I'd see cause for complaint, but that's just a thumbnail on the front.

Consider the alternative; people in power positions making decisions about what is art and what is sleaze--now that's a scary thought.

P.S.--What's this all about? Are you asking us all for our opinions or is this a personal vendetta?
What kind of male would any female attract by this means, a sleeze, of course, and what will she end up with, a sleeze and what will she complain about "she can't get a decent guy" well no wonder.

hey its good to see someone who is thinking about the way certain images impact emotions and undermine our confidence as women. why is such a large percent of women resorting to plastic surgery? how do the demands of society REALLY affect us. perfection is demanded of us, but what does it matter if a guy is greying and aging; oh, hes just 'distinguished looking"

I think sleaze should most definitely NOT be allowed on Orble.

HOWEVER, I think there is a line between humour and sleaze, I am a pretty sensitive soul and the pic you are referring to (i think) did not cross the line in my books, i had a laugh..and that is saying something as I generally do not find pleasure in naked men at all !!!!

It doesn't bother me at all. And if there is anything that I find offensive about someone's post, I just won't visit. I don't really think that I have any right to tell someone what they can or can't post. But I can choose whether to read or not.

I say, if something is offensive, just stay away from it. Chances are that there are plenty of people who don't find the item the least bit offensive.

I feel that the internet in general is one of the last great hopes for free speech, and any attempt to regulate it is dangerous. I have to agree with KylieW, if you don't like it, don't read it. That is how you vote.

Unless it's out and out porn what is the problem? It's 2008 in case you haven't noticed and this is the internet. People have the freedom to print what they like and people also have the freedom not to read it if they don't like it.

I had to read through the comments to find the post you were talking about and I've seen worse on a Mills & Boon book cover.

This is supposed to be a blogging site not a knitting club. If your sensibilities are that easily offended maybe you shouldn't be on the web at all. If you don't like it, don't read it.

There is solution to all this.
"Mature Content"

One of my old post that I thought was pretty inoffensive was slapped with a mature content rating without my knowledge.

I think that people can always do the same for their own posts.

I am not so sure about policing other peoples posts.

Not many seem too, but I completely agree Krystal.

It seems more and more display pictures, and titles on Orble are going this way.

We already have to deal with this on a constant basis everywhere else, and now Orble is no different, using sex to sell in every possible way. I'm so over it, we as a people have so little depth, don't we?

I've stopped clicking on the HOME page now, because I'm tired of reading and seeing sucker posts just wanting hits.
Welcome to mediocrity.

Pictures are used to grab attention, and unfortunately it's true. It's not just on Orble, but everywhere else too. A flip through some of the 'MySpace' profiles and you can instantly tell who simply just want the attention and who is actually on there for friendship...

Krystal, Katyzz, Lord Tibs or whatever psuedonym you are going under, I have lost track and shocked to find you under all these titles? ...

... I see your struggles here with morality and its possible erosion, and agree in part with both you and Jarrah, in that I would hate to see orble sink to pornagraphic levels like other sites, particularly as it is a writers site - not that I have ever read much in the written form from you myself... but perhaps I missed one of your aliases along the way?

But to answer your question, this is such a subjective area - and I am not about to dig a hole for myself.

One thing I will say though, about the cheeky stuff that you relate to, which despite your claim to the contrary, does often very openly and honestly incorporate a very witty repartee to validate the quality of the pic in question (from a writers perspective of someone trying to better thier writing skills by hosting a blog in the first place). We are not talking outright pronography and doesn't (in my opinion) demand a knee-jerk reaction to a human body being beautiful... no more than one of God's flowers would ... are we not talking art here? What of the Cistene Chapel and naked David's and Venus De Milo's everywhere?

Why not an Adonis or two in the kitchen?

As I said; a fine line ...and an individual one at that!

I do not feel that this one post degraded orble as others have, enough to warrant such an outcry as yours and would be the first to join you if things did get pornographic ... but that's just my view and now my vote adds to your pay packet.

and so it goes...

Lilla ...

I've moved this post to the writer's forum.

This is where posts about Orble should be posted, otherwise the popular posts list clogs up with posts about Orble and outside readers have nothing to read.

Also see this post on the new Family Friendly Setting if you are worried about the images which may be displayed in your blog's menu.

Damo -- the editors rate posts as mature if we think they risk upsetting Google Adsense, who have banned sites in the past for showing ads on quite inoffensive material. I don't like doing it but cannot risk having our account barred.

Thanks,
Jon.

Thus thunders down the quiet all pervasive voice of reality and the ad sense god's.

Actually a good point for those trying to make some money from their blogging. The Family Friendly Setting, good move Jon.

Thanks Gaye for giving me your well moderated opinion, quite frankly I was sick to death of seeing those girlie images and then , in my opinion, that guy with the bowl between his legs and the disgustingly suggestive caption, over and over again, but now that Jon has introduced his Family Friendly requirement I can be relieved of that burden.

Lavatory and other low class attempts at humour have never appealed to me and I’m sure others share my view.

Fog, your logic is sadly lacking, I know you love a good fight and also love to win, I am not going to play the game, as to my picture I thought is was damn ugly and still have in mind to change it when I see something more suitable but it is not in any way related to the concerns of this post.

Cheryl, the filter is a great idea as were the pictures before the bombardment of those unseemly images and I thought the title of the particular post was quite disgusting, but now I will not have it in front of my face any more thanks to this new filter which I had not heard about when I wrote this post.

Raven, thank you for your well considered response, I’m glad you don’t like sleeze but I do think we all know what it means, to argue about that is just a matter of semantics and is a cute way always of divesting oneself of responsibility but this last remark is not aimed at you.

D. Armenta, come on ‘bright spark’ I couldn’t move on it was in my face every time I posted, I chose not to read the post but the from the image there was no escape, over and over again. Express how you feel but don’t tell me what to do, if you don’t mind.

Don’t read more into this and make accusations and insinuation which are not warranted, Jon, hopefully has solved the problem with his filtering strategy, and that happened before this post went on and it was not myself who made any complaint. I am so glad they did and so glad Jon acted. Go paddle in your own sludge.

Kleo, that’s just where I expected you’d be.

Anon, lovely to have your view, it’s a pleasant change and one with a little thought behind it not just license.

Louie, I’m glad you don’t think sleeze belongs on Orble but as to the rest, you disappoint me.

Kylie, I did not read the post but was presented with the image over and over again and its digusting title, I could not escape it, an unanticipated side effect of Jon’s new picture scheme which I like very much, without those, to me, offensive images and there were several of them for a considerable time.

Jon’s new filter should solve the problem. More thought from people would have been preferred as it was not simply just a question of not reading it; it was the constant bombardment with the images. What I am doing is a lot harder than simply going along with things.

Natalie, another stupid comment, I did not read it, the image was repeatedly before me, this was not an invitation to tell me what to do, go find your alpha male, I hope he treats you well and doesn’t just use you for sexual fodder. You may also like to engage in some research so that you understand just what free speech is.

Anon, I am aware of the date, thank you and it should not surprise you that people other than yourself have standards which they accept need to be maintained. Go drown in your own sludge I am getting sick of all this senseless stupidity, to justify what? sleeze and we all know what sleeze is, don’t we, let’s not pretend otherwise.

Nomad, I expected I might not get one response from this post, you read that one wrong.

You didn’t answer the question and what you prepare and eat will end up just as you describe it but it is not a word I use, I have advanced to being able to use faeces or excrement but that might be too difficult for you. Go drown yourself with those others in your own sludge, if you don’t like it, don’t read it, let alone comment on it.

Thank you Damo for a considered, polite response, I think Jon’s filter should fix the problem.

Jarrah, you expressed this so well, thank you

Norm, at least you have demonstrated humour and a certain respect, love the juxtaposition. You should take up photography, equal but opposite, as usual.

Thanks Amy, that’s an original view.

Lilla, the name’s Crystal, handled by Orble as Krystal. I found your comments almost totally illogical and not deserving of reply.

You demonstrate more than a reasonable amount of “mean spiritedness” which in some ways does not surprise me but indeed it does not become YOU.

Raoul, you are both direct and clever, good for you, but your taste is deplorable.

Jon, I’m sorry I got moved. Mine was quite the prettiest picture you’ve had for a long time. I hope you will also move the current ‘Orble’ post cluttering up the most popular list. I wrote this post before I learned of your filter. Hopefully it will work well and I and others like me will no longer be bothered.

This is just sheer hard work and for those interested I have not earned one cent from this post so forget those ‘whacky’ ideas.

Raven, Nice of you to return. The filter is an excellent idea.

In my short time at orble I've noticed if you ask a question in your post title, you're bound to get votes. You might not of had that on your agenda, but to say you didnt expect to get a response, well that just seems naive.

anyway I'm off to the sludge. (mines flavoured)

I cant believe no one has said this yet.

But......

Does anyone else think those crystals up there look phallic? Honestly I thought that was intended and this was like a joke within a joke. Thats honestly what I thought! Did anyone else think those crystals looked like vibrators?

Im just trying to demonstrate diversity between how individuals think. I honestly thought it was done on purpose but now Im not so sure.

But come on, I cant be the only one!

The words used around here lately are far more offensive to me than the images.
