Seeing posts on Homepage with 5 votes

December 29th 2006 16:20
Hi all,

Should we change the default from 10 votes to 5 to appear on orble homepage, so that we get more variety of authors on homepage?

I know you could manually change it but most visitors would probably just leave it as is most of the time, and a lot of great posts can get missed.

Dear Pegasus and anyone else who wants to comment on Pegasus' post,

Before you do: have a read over the discussion on this issue in November.

But perhaps two key points are these (from Jon):

"It's always going to be a trade-off between giving everyone exposure and quality of content."

"I think the threshold should probably be set by the number of posts that appear above it on the front page during one day. I think anymore than 30 new posts a day would probably be too much for your average reader. Also, any more than that and each Post is getting so little exposure it's not really worth being on the front page by default anyway."

I don't necessarily agree with the idea that just because the posts with more Karma automatically hit the front page, means that they're quality.

I mean hell, any of the "top 10"...hell, the top fifty blogs' writers have enough Karma that they could theoretically post pictures of a sheep orgy and still get onto the front page, where they would continue to get the clicks and votes. Where's the fairness in that?

Once they hit the 10-point threshold, no effort is required to get to the front page, where they get more exposure. They've already got their names on the front page and on everyone else's blogs in Popular Blogs sidebars - how much more do they want/need? Popularity doesn't necessarily mean quality.

I'm all for dropping the required votes for the front page.

thanks Adrian for the link...

I'm all for the quota, but I argued for it to be higher! I envisioned a magazine-style front page, with just the highest rated stories on the front...

I like your idea, Cibbuano. Putting the quota at 25 or so would let the posts that really shine stand out.

I think it should be around 20 too actually.

Its kind of a rich getting richer, poor getting poorer thing.

The homepage ends up being filled with the same writers constantly while the rest get no exposure.
