Referral Codes?

October 23rd 2007 11:26
Hi,

I guess my question is simply what Google Referral Codes exactly is. I tried to read about it in Google's Adsense site, but still don't quite get it.

I also see in "Settings" that Orble has this in Beta and therefore it would be nice to know. Is it ads that are more directed to specific categories or do you get money only if the clicker buys something from the target site...?

Thanks.

Hi Peeker,

You have it pretty much right.

You pick categories of ads (and last I looked you could pick specific adverts) to go on your site. You get paid when someone click on the ad and then performs a specific action -- usually either buying something or signing up to something. So it's pay per action (referral) rather than pay per click.

The upside of this is that you can be quite specific about which ads are displayed on your site. However our experiments showed that using referral ads resulted in a decrease in revenue. That was about 3 months ago however so the situation may have changed -- and Google has brought out something called Referral Ads 2.0 which may be better.

If you want to try them out to see if they have improved to the point where they give a better return than regular ads then go ahead and be sure to let me know what the results are

Jon.

Thanks Jon.

Well, can you activate it for my blog? I added the code needed in settings. I would like it to be above the post-box and under the header, you know where the current wide banner is.

Cheers,

peeker

Yep -- it seems that everyone who has tried it has found it to give worse returns than regular AdSense. It seems strange that Google would implement a system which they know to give poor results. Perhaps it is better in some circumstances -- just what those are who knows.
