Query re e-mail subscriptions
November 30th 2006 00:44
Hey Jon,
Was wondering -- is there any way of telling how many people have e-mail subscriptions to a blog? And if not, could there be?
I suppose I'm asking more out of curiosity than anything else. This would be another stat that could indicate over time whether the quality of a blog is maintained, but I suppose it's more suggestive than meaningful.

This is for e-mail subscriptions. I think Ahmed is right - hits to the RSS feed would be misleading, since most news readers check the feed every five/ten minutes.

I don't know too much about RSS (i know it stands for 'really simple syndication').
Why would one choose RSS over email subscription or vice versa?

If you have an email subscription you will be sent an e-mail whenever a new post is created.
Similarly, you will use a news reader to check the RSS feed for multiple sites. You will be alerted whenever the feed for a site changes - ie - a new post/article is created.

I guess you'd choose RSS if you subscribe to LOTS of Blogs and you don't want your e-mail inbox to be battered with loads of e-mail notifications. Also, some RSS feeds contain the content of the whole post, which can be viewed in your news reader...
