Plagiarism

October 20th 2010 21:06
I have posted here for a while. The other day I went to racingweekend.com to read an article. The article was plagiarized word for word. I do not want to be part of a blog community that promotes or condones plagiarism. I would be pissed if it was my article but the bonehead stole the article from nascar.com. Will orble do anything about this?

Hi Richie,

Plagiarism is an issue between the original content provider and the plagiarist. The plagiarist is actually doing his blog harm - the search engines penalise copied material. But if it offends you, just notify nascar.com.

I don't think Orble should, or realistically even can, be expected to take responsibility here. There is no way it can monitor every blog for plagiarism, nor do I think it needs to.

As I said, the issue is between the blogger and the original source of the material.

Regards,
Chris

As a blog community we should all be concerned about this. When a crime, and do not be mistaken it is a felony, is committed and writers just say "whatever", they condone and lessen the credibility of every writer associated with orble. Orble does have a responsibility to do something about this. That is why they have posting rules.

I have notified Nascar.com.specifically the writers of the articles, and I am sure they will do something about it.

I disagree with you.

Yeah, the author Rick Gillispie that plagarized constantly copies articles from websites on all of the Orble blogs he runs. I am sick of him doing this, and I am all for repruccusions against him. Usually I would say nothing, but this is too much.

Hi Richie and Joe,

I can understand that people get annoyed by plagiarism, but the fact is there is little profit in plagiarism in blogs.

I decided to address this in some depth in my own blog about blogging, and the result is here.

Comments, questions and further discussion welcome - and thanks for bringing the subject up and giving me the idea for a post.

Ya like I don't understand the point of just "re posting" article that other writers and websites have published. Video I can understand. But full length articles word for word is wrong.

Like I thought MS Paint Art was a good orble blog until I saw that their just reposting news articles. That's def Plagiarism. And it's not fair to us "real" bloggers that this blog has a higher traffic rank and rank in orble. Blogs that do this should be penalized! And should not be in the top 100 list.

If one uses other writer's material, it should be referenced and quoted as needed. Give credit where credit is due.

@ Kenna; Your exactly right. People have to stop copying pasting and actually come up with their material.

Plagiarism is theft. Shoplifting is theft.
There are extensive laws covering all forms of theft. Just because we're on the Internet doesn't mean laws are suspended.

Plagiarism is copying without consent of the original writer.

Most writers will, if asked, happily give consent for their article, short story, whatever, to be pushed further into the main stream of global internet circulation.

The difficulty in defining plagiarism lies in the fact that many online users believe that "Creative Commons" gives them the right to 'copy' for the purposes of private, educational use - one copy - only. What they don't realise that where this falls down, is that it is ONE copy only. One copy is not placing it on your Internet site. One copy is a single run off, downloaded to your printer.

Not all countries subscribe to 'Creative Commons', in total. Here in Australia, we have added many differentials to protect our writers. Many countries in the EU are closely watching our courts in Canberra, adopting our legislation and fine-tuning it to their country's needs.

Too many people are assuming the USA Internet rights are the ones they have to live by. They're wrong, ours in Australia are much better. Go look.

Since Orble is based in Australia, shouldn't it therefore prescribe to Australian copyright laws?

As someone who used to write quite a few blogs on Orble back in it's earliest days, I think I can say that the quality control in this place has definitely dropped and it doesn't surprise me that this kind of plagiarism is now running rampant.

I never understood the point of the blog MS Paint Art, it just didn't seem to make any sense to me even when it wasn't copying and pasting articles wholesale from other websites like Brainerddispatch.com.
And then there are countless blogs where someone just talks about an issue (or worse, talks about 'blogging' itself) and asks a question designed to generate commentary and blog 'points'. Where is the content in that? Besides the fact that it's plagiarism, re-reporting something and failing to add anything of substance or depth to it is just a waste of e-space.

This place used to be beautiful, now it's full of spam and dodgy practices. Who's even running this ship? It doesn't look like anyone has even posted in this writer's forum since November last year. I used to recieve money from traffic generated by my blogs, but a few years ago it just stopped being sent to me.

There is nothing wrong in recycling another's story as long as you credit the author and add a link.

He's right.
Plagiarism erodes all our credibility.
I found out about forty sites have republished my photo of a kangaroo. I don't know what to do about it.
