Email notifications control

December 8th 2006 09:41
Hi admins of the great Orble!

Recently after reading the infamous post of My First Orble Pet Peeve :: Multiple Comments

I noticed that what Adrian commented about too many email notifications.

Is there a way to tell the system not to remind me of a specific post after commented several times. I might still want some posts to be reminded but what I see in the settings is to uncheck the email reminder of ALL REPLIES.

Will there be an improvement on this logic in future?

Thanks for your time.

Hi Jessica

This is on the list - but we're not quite sure how best to implement it I suggested that the first comment after your most recent comment should produce a notification. Jon suggested that the last five people to comment should be notified. Or we could make it so just the people who created the last five comments (ie - could be two people having a conversation) are notified. Or we could (possibly) make it so you are notified of the first comment after your most recent comment and then every fifth comment after that.

As you can see there are plenty of options - any thoughts on what would work best? Anyone, anyone???

Cheers
Jay

Hi Jay,

I remembered that one of the forums have this function, which is very tedious, but perhaps workable if Orblers are aware of it (?)

Each time when you post a comment, there is a checkbox below that says:
"Notify me of repies"

If you post without that notification, you won't be notified in the future, until your next comment and click on the checkbox.

What do you think?

I think that is doable, but is this flexible enough? I'll have a think about it

Well, every notification is tied by the post / comment. It is not per blog. So it actually narrows down pretty much to:

notification of
- per post per user.

If there is like 1000 Orblers out there that would be like, 1000 post per user.

What I observed in that forum is once it is notified. The record of the notification per user is taken off from the database until the next request of notification by the user.

But I believe this applies to posts that you are not the originator. Perhaps the post originator / blog owner should be notified at all times for that particular post (like the logic used right now) as each post orginator / blog owner has the responsibility to their own posts.

I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. Sometimes my words get very distarted. LOL...

No that sounds fine - I'll look into it when I get chance...

Jay, re the first set of suggestions, one problem with these is that people might want to be notified of every new comment.

The problem with Jessica's suggestion, as I understand it, is that she wants there to be a "no more notifications" checkbox beneath the form for new comments. So you can't turn off notifications without making a new comment.

The easiest from a user point of view (though tricky from your end) might be: (1) to have Jessica's suggestion in place -- whenever you comment you can choose not to receive any more notifications for this particular post; AND (2) when you get a notification e-mail, you can click on something that says "no more notifications for this post".

Hi Adrian

Yes - I have considered Jessica's suggestion in the past and I came to the same conclusion - having to post a comment to stop receiving comment notifications seems a little backward

I think the email link you suggest, along with Jessica's 'No More Notifications' checkbox, is as good a solution as we're going to get. I'll look to add something along those lines as soon as I get chance.

Cheers

Hi Jay and Adrian,

I double checked on the forum and there IS a notification link in the email to "unsubscribe" to that particular post.

What I said on the checkbox actually starts from the beginning, not that you have auto notification, you actually don't have notification from the very beginning, unless you want to be notified, the checkbox value is always "false".

And this is useful for those who commented for the first time but they just want to leave a comment and do not want to be notified. I think it is different from email notifications from any new post of that particular blog, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, I too am fore with the unotify me link in the email that would be a good way to uncheck the notification of that particular post without going posting any comments (double work).

Cheerio and have a great weekend!

Could we maybe have the option of choosing between a couple of notification styles? Maybe you can choose if you want an individual email for each reply, or choose to have a single email with all the day's reply instead?

That sounds like the Yahoo!Groups notification...

Kind of a lot of back-end process I hope Jay can figure out that soon.

Hey Jay,

An idea about something to change in terms of e-mail notification.

When I look at my inbox in hotmail, I see admin@orble.com in the sender field, and something like "Orble News - New Comment" in the subject field. What I can't tell striaght off is which particular POST in the Orble News blog the notification is for, so I have to check each e-mail.

Could the name of the post also be displayed in the subject line?

Hi Adrian

I don't see why not, though I'd best see what Jon thinks - we don't want to risk the notifications being caught accidentally by spam filters.

Cheers
Jay
