Orble Revamp - perhaps a competitoin?
February 18th 2009 21:54
Does anyone else think that Orble needs a bit of a revamp?
No offence to Jon but I think Orble is looking a bit dated, both the home page and the logo. I'd like to see it modernised a bit to bring it into line with other blogging networks which look very up-to-the-minute. I know Jon is doing all of this on his own but perhaps a competition could be run to get a new design.
Any thoughts on this?

also the options at the top that say:
maybe they could be coloured tabs
an example that is not a blogging network would be YouPlay, an online game and puzzle site that utilises colour well
some blogging networks and writing sites have a weekly or daily "featured writer" box where they highlight a users bio
or a "feature issue" box where they select a hot topic and conveniently bunch a few related articles for readers to access from homepage
i made some other Technical Suggestions back in September 08 to make the site more user-friendly
i competiton for a logo could be a good idea, i like the little globe, but a slight variation might be refreshing . . . the logo might be a registered trademark or something that cant be altered too much

I agree with tabs being a diff. colour. What are the channel buttons? Bunching related articles is a great idea too. Maybe someone (You?) should do a post and link it back to this since it seems to have slipped off the radar and many others may have suggestions. Great as I think Orble is, my main problem with it is trying to track back to posts I have seen. And the 'notify me of replies' facility seems to only work up to a point

i think the current buttons take up alot of space - it could even be a drop-down menu, or a link that directs to a seperate web-page

Janet, you'll get there! Keep at it, your writing is fabulous.
Teresa, I'm not sure if you're asking how I changed the icon or how I made it. The icon was a photoshop art project that I uploaded onto my profile page.
Morgan, great ideas as usual. I'd love to see coloured tabs and channel buttons and also 'report abuse' buttons added for posts.
I just think the home page looks a bit early 90s and I'd love to see it funked up a bit with some more colour.

Can you actually block users? I know you can turn off anon comments but can you prevent chosen people commenting? Just curious?

you can install widgets on Orble, you just have to do it manually
follow the instructions on THIS POST about how to create a Blogroll and enter the HTML code for whatever widgets you want into your Blogroll post
remember to write "HTML3456" before and "/HTML" (square brackets where inverted commas are) after any HTML code you want to work
