Need Immediate Help! My Blog Won't Display Properly

July 9th 2007 01:05
Orble Techs:

Help! I've done something terrible to my main blog at WritersNotes.Net (while inserting code into the Top Menu Section of my sidebar), which has caused my blog to basically stop displaying anything except the title banner, the Google links along the top, and the sidebar--and not even all of that! While attempting to insert code to display a feed from "The Good Blogs," I had trouble getting the feed to display in the sidebar. It would only display in the Top Menu Section post. While I tried various things, the code was altered, and I erroneously clicked "Modify Post" without realizing the code was incorrect (and therefore without changing it back). As soon as I did this, my blog stopped displaying.

I am now unable to correct the problem, because, when I go to Modify Post for my Top Menu Section post (which I've placed at the very bottom of my archives), the bottom portion of the screen, where I actually do the modifying is also not displaying, so I can't make any changes to the code I've already put into the Top Menu Section post.

I hope you can help--and soon! My blog has had over 100 readers a day recently, and I wouldn't want to lose any of them because of this!

Thanks for any help you can give me!

I've fixed this for you.

Do you need me to send you the old content of the Top Menu Section post? Do you know what is wrong with it?

Jon.

Thanks so much, Jon!

Yes, I would appreciate the old content, since most of it is fine. The code from "The Good Blogs" feed was the problem. I realized after I'd clicked Modify that it shouldn't have contained those "Really Long Links," for one thing. Though, even before that, the feed wouldn't show up in the sidebar--only inside the Top Menu Section blog post. I'm not sure why. I was attempting to correct that problem when I unwittingly created the other--really serious--problem!

I'd like to be able to use the "Good Blogs" feed--if we can get it to work properly! But, in the meantime, I think I'll settle for restoring the other items I had in my sidebar that weren't giving me trouble!

If you noticed any other problem(s) that I haven't mentioned, perhaps you wouldn't mind explaining them to me. I'd appreciate it!

Can you e-mail me the content that was removed? I'm so glad you saved it! I was thinking I'd have to recreate it all--which wouldn't be fun!

Thanks again!
Jeanne

I've emailed the content.

Let me know if you have any problems getting it working again and we can go from there.

Jon.

Hi Everyone!

I am havign trouble with the links I added to my 2nd post, as well as the text color. Although I highlighted it to make it black like the rest of the entry, it won't change it. And the links aren't working.

Also, the link I was given to resigter with adsense doesn't work, the page will not display. I want to register so I can get paid.

Thank you for your help!

Warm regards,
Daria

Daria,

The easiest way I've discovered to create a link at Orble is to first type the title of your link into the body of your blog post, then select it, click the link icon, insert the link URL in the little window that opens (including "http://"), and click "OK."

When done this way, your link's title automatically becomes your anchor text and the link is created around it. That way, there's no need to insert your link title later. (If not done this way, your link will appear with a little section that says "Your text goes here." You'll then need to remove and replace that statement with your own preferred link title.)

Hope that helps!
Jeanne

P.S. Welcome to Orble!

Daria,

Thought I'd add a few more points about creating links at Orble:

While the method I mentioned in my comment above is by far the simplest way to create a link, it's always good to know the exact components your link needs to be both complete and functional. That way, should you ever need to revise a link in any way or restore one that's become altered, you'll know how to do so:

First, you need "[", followed immediately by "LINK=", after which, again leaving no spaces, you'd type (or copy and paste) the entire URL, beginning with "http://" and including any extensions or other info necessary to navigate to the precise webpage you're linking to.

For example: "http://www.sitename.extension/anyaddedlinkinfo". The URL would then be immediately followed by "]". (It appears, from your blog posts, that you've done this much correctly.) Directly after this would be your link title (or anchor text), followed by "[/LINK]".

(It's extremely important not to omit this last section from your link: "[/LINK]" because that is what signifies the end of the link. Without that, your link is incomplete and, for all practical purposes, is not a link at all. You'll also want to make sure you include anchor text, for the reader to click in order to access your link. This must be placed between "]" and "[/LINK]".)

No spaces would be left between any of the above link sections; though you may, of course, leave spaces between the words in your anchor text, or link title, which will actually be displayed in your blog post.

Hope the above info isn't too difficult to follow! I wanted to show you an actual example of a properly created link, but was afraid that the Orble software would create a link out of it, rather than allowing me to show you the components that the link contains.

Good luck!
Jeanne
