Log-in. Log-out. Loggerheads!

October 18th 2007 00:32
Hi Jon...

I am not considered 'logged in' even when I am.

There are times when I don't wish to nor feel like leaving a comment after reading a post... just wish to vote but...even though I log in, my full points don't register.
I know that I have been able to do this before...read and vote with full points without leaving a comment.

I think a few others are having this problem. Has something changed again?...in order to stop non commented upon posts from reaching the Top 10?

That's unfortunate if that's the case. There are many posts I don't wish to add my opinion to nor tell them what their opinion should be but I wish to show my full appreciation.

Thank you

Dusk

Hi Dusk,

Nothing has changed. Over the last couple of days we have been having a few problems with the central Orble server which controls logging in and out and it's probably this which has been causing the problems.

However if it says "Logout" in the top navigation bar (ie you really are logged in to the domain you are visiting) and you are still having problems with the voting then it's something else. If this is the case let me know. Remember that if you login to one Orble domain is does not necessarily mean that you are logged in to all of them, you need to check the navigation bar to see if it says "Logout" or "Login".

Thanks for letting me know about the problem, always appreciated. Hopefully I've managed to block all the spambots and things will settle down again. My blood pressure could use a reprieve

Jon.

Hi Jon...

Thanks and no...it doesn't say 'Logout' in the navigation bar, which is what has been frustrating me.

I click on 'log-in' but...nothing...just goes back to same page and I know I'm logged in because I'll go to My Orble without a problem....so yes the Orble server is playing tricks...hopefully it'll get over its Halloween gig and treat us well soon!

As for your blood pressure...you may have to unplug to get that down!

Thanks Jon.

Dusk

If that is a recent problem then it probably was the server.

If problems persist then see a doctor you may want to look at:

Really Long Link

to see if there is another problem.

I just noticed this...if I'm on a page/post I have already commented on...the navigation bar shows 'Logout' but as soon as I move elsewhere to read/comment on another post...back to 'Log in'.

What's the deal with that?

I'm assuming that each post is on a different domain?

Because of the way that browsers monitor security we cannot log you into all the Orble domains at once. Otherwise the designers of a website on one domain could monitor your activity across just about any domain you visit after that.

If you have logged in recently on one Orble domain, then go to another which you have not visited for a while (or never before) you will either have to reload the page or click on the login link to actually login. Alas there is no way around this. The designers of browser security did not have blogging networks in mind when they designed the system.

Hope that makes sense.

Jon.

I've been having this problem a whole lot as of late.

Firefox seems to have abetter time handling the logout/login thing, when I click on 'login' in firefox it displays 'logout'. IE7 on the other hand doesn't ever work, even after clearing out my cookies.

Jon....it's 'better' today.
When I'm on Orble homepage, still says 'log in' but as soon as I click on a post, 'logout'.

Thanks.

Ahmed -- The only reason I can think of for that is that you have your settings set differently on IE than you do on Firefox. I realise you would have thought of that already -- but it's the only thing I can come up with.

Dusk -- Glad it's better today. The server seems to be behaving itself.

I may have to redo the login system anyway. It's causing quite a load on the central server for very little benefit.

mmm, yeah thats what I'm thinking but I can't figure it out.

Anyway, I just cleared out my cookies again in IE7 and this time it seems to be working. Wait, let me elaborate: It seems to be sort-of working and not working.

This domain (writers forum) is working fine, other domains not-so-much. Erm, well basically if I click on 'login' it loads the page but without logout, but afterwards I hit refresh (F5) and it works.

So basically to make it work I click on 'login', then hit 'F5' on my keyboard and then logout finally shows (yay).

In case people are afraid of deleting their cookies (i.e. have no idea what I'm going on about) Heres what I did (in pictures )

Just click on what is circled in red:

This may cause saved info (mostly passwords) to dissapear from sights you might have had an autologin to. Shouldn't be too much trouble to remember the old passwords.

Ok I've just found out it isn't as simple as click login/hit refresh on all domains.

For some it's just fiddling around, this could all just be spontaneous but on some domains it's login/refresh/login/refresh to make it work. I have no idea why, but once it works once it seems to stick (well at least for the session as far as I can tell).

I just realised that I've been leaving comments this morn, and they have worked, come up as me with my pic without asking me to log in (because I am logged in) - but it hasn't been adding points too, at least not all the time.

Do you know why? I thought the points were added automatically with a comment?

Ahmed -- does it work now? I've changed the login system. Still not perfect but it's getting there.

Michaelie -- the points should be automatic, especially if your comments are coming up as you (ie you were definitely logged in). Which post were you commenting on?

MNG's Pop Culturist. I left the first message, so noticed when it didn't go to 20 points. Had to then vote separately. Not sure when else it might have happened.

It just happened again on jdmfilmreviews. Left a comment first again, and it worked logged in, but left no points, so tried to vote separately like last time but only gave one this time.

It's like I'm logged in but I'm not. If I'm not logged in then it would prompt me to log in when I comment wouldn't it? But the comment works, just not the points.

Seems to be working fine now Jon, just clicking on 'login' once and it logs me in no questions asked.

I think it might be due to the length of your posts Michaelie. Orble doesn't register votes if the comment is short (at least I think so).

Comment by Michaelie

October 25th 2007 13:03
Really? Well what's the minimum length? I think I'm just not logged in in that particular domain, but have logged when I got on the internet, so it's doing the comment as if I am logged in, but I'm not really, so the points don't work... But then I don't know much about this stuff.

if it showed your name with your display pic then it might just have been yoru comment length.

I'm not sure, might really be a bug.

The first two would not have counted because they were too short. A comment needs to be at least 7 characters long (not including white space or punctuation) to get the full votes. We did this because some people were rorting the system.

The third comment is a bit more problematic because it is definitely more than 7 characters.

It doesn't happen every time. Thanks for letting me know about the comment length.

The last one - I don't know. I logged in then it asked me to log in again and then I don't think it put points on automantically.

Well, I'll watch it anyway to make sure it does from now on.

Michaelie
