Karma points and voting without commenting.

May 21st 2008 22:14
I'm not sure if anyone else finds this a problem but it drives me bananas. There may be a reason for it but I'm not sure. Maybe a more experienced Orbler can clue me in.

Whenever I open Orble, I always log in then I just go off surfing through the many pages and clicking on the posts that look interesting. Sometimes I want to leave a comment but there are times I don't really have anything to say but want to vote. Often because I haven't 'logged in' on that particular page it will register as an anonymous vote. Sometimes I don't think to check if my name has appeared and by then it's too late, only 1 point has been given when my karma points should have awarded that person a higher vote. Isn't that the point of karma points?

It doesn't seem to happen all the time so I can't figure out if it's because I'm visiting a different domain. Is there a way around this? I don't want to have to try to remember to log into every post I'm reading so I can vote with my higher karma value. I just left a vote on someone's post who deserved the 10 points I could give (even though I had nothing to contribute) but because I didn't check before clicking the vote button the post only got 1. I know karma points are awarded to us as an incentive to comment and contribute to the Orble community but sometimes I don't really have anything to say but have enjoyed reading.

Is there a setting that keeps you logged in for every page?

Cheers,
Cheryl J

You do have to login to each different Orble domain you visit in order to have your full karma counted when you vote. Unfortunately there is no way around this as we cannot set cookies (which we need to identify people) on every domain at once.

However, once you have logged into a particular domain you should not have to do so again unless you either log-out or delete your cookies.

I wish I could make it so that you could login to every domain at once, however it's just not technically possible at the moment. I could set up an automatic redirect, however I would have to pay for another server just for the purpose and it would also slow down page loading times.

Thanks Jon

I had a feeling it might have something to do with the separate domains. It also explains why it didn't do it all the time. I'm already logged in with certain domains that I revisit often and it's obviously happening when I click into something new. That makes perfect sense. I'll just have to be less forgetful!

Thanks for the explanation.

Cheers
