Google for mobile and google analytics
September 18th 2007 23:27
Is Orble intending to be involved with these, and if so, how do we go about it, from Orble's perspective.
I tried the analytics but I think I've put it in the wrong place, it may need to be done in keeping with Orble's programs.

GM is a service to use google to search web pages on your mobile and as we are indexed by Google I presume that we are automatically included.
Do you mean could Orble have a mobile web page version?

In order to use AdSense for mobile, you must have a mobile-compliant webpage; adding AdSense for mobile ad code to a standard webpage will not display ads.
If you don't currently have a mobile website (and chances are, if you're not sure, then you don't have one), you can create one by rewriting your existing website in a mobile markup language, such as XHTML, WML, or CHTML. You'll also need to make sure the layout of your website is properly formatted to display on mobile phones.
In addition, your mobile website will need to be developed using server-side scripting such as PHP or ASP. Many web hosting providers support PHP, and in many cases, you can PHP-enable your webpages simply by changing the file extension from .htm to .php. Thereafter you can paste the PHP code snippet into the section of the page where you want the AdSense for mobile ads to appear.
Keep in mind that Google will not be able to assist you with creating a mobile website. However, you may be able to find resources on the web that could help you create a mobile site. We suggest doing a Google search for terms such as "create mobile website" or "make mobile webpage".
Once you've created a mobile webpage that complies with our program policies, you're welcome to add Google ads to it!
Hope this is helpful, there's some other things there too, it seems a step in the right direction, perhaps being aware of the potential targeted audience, in constructing the site, honing in specifically on topics that may draw an audience and response on the mobile, especially with the likes of the new iPods.
But maybe a special section of Orble would be a more feasible option, designed specifically for the mobile purpose, if it requires a lot of setting up.
Hope there is something there of interest to us all.

Google Adsense for Mobile allows you to run Adsense ads on your mobile-specific/-friendly website. This is completely different from Google Mobile, which is Google's own pages formatted for mobile devices.
I believe that Google Adsense for Mobile (GAfM) is actually an opt-out service, so, if you have Adsense ads already, then Google will by default include them on mobile sites who use GAfM if they're relevant in the same way as it posts on 'normal' sites. The problem with this is that you may be paying for advertising to appear on mobile devices that your website doesn't cater for. I.e. your site might not work properly, or be impossible to use, on mobile devices. If you've done nothing to format the page for handheld devices, assume this is the case!
There are two ways to get your website to appear properly on mobiles. You can create a new site specifically with mobile and hand-held devices in mind. This was the justification behind the new .mobi top-level domain (TLD). e.g. orble.mobi, which could be the mobile-specific version of Orble. This was created to easily identify mobile-specific websites. Check out the .mobi site for information on developing for mobiles and also to see how your site looks on a mobile phone screen - a great service, but it can highlight why you should opt-out of GAfM until your site is ready. Check out how Orble.com appears on the Nokia N70, for example.
Alternatively you can use CSS (cascaded style sheets) to reformat an existing page or site for mobile devices, e.g. by removing all the images from display. There is more information on CSS media types at the w3.org wesbite.
The 'killer app' for Mobile Internet, imho, has to be location-specific services, e.g. finding a good restaurant close by or checking the White Pages for an address. Before you develop a mobile-specific site, you need to consider whether yours is the kind of website that people will be interested in whilst on the move. If you have a shop, for example, it may be better to list on a mobile-friendly directory than go to the trouble of creating your own .mobi site.
I hope this clarifies when/why you'd use GAfM or Google mobile.

I suppose I could think of alternatives, but I feel a little green at this stage, and your input took us beyond just what google had to say.
Very generous of you and thank you.
