Inserting a Link into a Post

Would you please let me know the best way to insert a link into a post.
After I hit the "Link" button (third from the right) it told me to typ the URL but when I brought up the preview post it had "Link Link then long URL then Link Link". I think I maybe missed a step.

I actually held the post back because the link was essential to the article. I have not inserted a link before so I am doing it with some hesitation.
Just to clarify how it is best to insert a link - Do you fill in the details that say "Link (optional)" near the information you put tags, etc? Or do you use the third buton from the right at the top of the draft piece? Or maybe both?
