Image ads on Orble blogs?
November 16th 2006 20:54
Fellow Orblers,
This post is more a fit of curiosity than anything else. I run well over thirty websites so sometimes my mind goes into corners it probably shouldn't be in, but heck, I have to ask.
Why is it that Orble doesn't at least rotate image ads with the text ads in Adsense? Personally, I would prefer to have ONLY image ads on my blog, but obviously choice is not an option.
First, they pay better. My CTR with Adsense has taken a considerable jump since I scrapped the old text only ads and started rotating image ads into the mix. On top of that, those ads cost more, thus, we get paid more right?
Second, they just look better. I understand why Orble has such a cluttered sidebar. There is a ton of stuff to try and squeeze in there and there really is no simple solution to fixing that, but when you throw plain old text ads in there it all jumbles together and the ads are almost difficult to pick out amongst everything else. Image ads would instantly fix this. Image ads would even ad some sexiness to our blogs because a lot of them are now in flash and have some pretty slick graphics.
I have no idea what kind of database structure Orble is running on, but it shouldn't be too difficult to allow a user the ability to choose between text only, text and image, or image only ads should it?
Am I just out in left field on this?

We do allow image ads to be run on Orble (we even had video ads at one point). If you look at the source code you will see google_ad_type = "text_image". Adsense is meant to figure out which ads pay the most and just display them - text or images.
We could change the settings to image only but I think that would reduce earnings.
We could also allow people to choose to display just text or just images. If this is something people feel strongly about we could put it on the list. I don't think it would be too hard to do at all.
Jon.

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I'm just trying to find a comfort zone so I can get started with some serious blogging. It might just be a pet peeve, and if it's just me then we can all ignore it, but my blog has been displaying ads on childrens books for two days now. With those ads showing at the top of a tech/marketing related blog it kind of throws the theme off a bit. I haven't seen a single image yet so I don't know if those are going to come in more targeted or not, but the current ads are just terrible. I know that isn't Orbles fault. Google isn't doing a good job for some reason.
On the image ads... I wouldn't mind having my header banner display images only for a bit to see if it works, but it's going to take more than me being interested to get it I'm sure.
Anyone else interested?

Occasionally I get image ads, so I think there's enough variation for me.
Also, it takes a while for the adwords to get targetted... at first, my ads were all unrelated, but these days, they're pretty spot-on.

For example:
www.politicaldip.com
Even though it's a new site my CTR is slightly higher with that ad up top and the one in the sidebar instead of text ads. Most of the time the ads look nice as well. Or at least... nicer.
My two cents.
