Suggestions for the comments section
October 30th 2006 06:28
Here's some ideas.
Just as you can't vote twice on the same post, each commenter (as opposed to each comment) should count for a single vote (eg, a long multi-comment exchange between two people should count for just two votes).
Just as you can't vote for your own posts, blog owners shouldn't be able to increase their votes by self-commenting (but perhaps should be rewarded in some other way?).
There should be an option not to receive any more e-mail notifications about new comments on a post (or is there already this feature?).
Maybe karma should be scrapped.
What do people reckon?

I agree with the first 3 or something very close to them and they are on the list.
Not sure about scrapping Karma though. I think it's quite useful.

But I don't have a strong opinion on the whole issue -- "Maybe karma should be scrapped", but maybe it shouldn't.
Arguments as to why it should be scrapped? Well, I guess these would revolve around the hierarchy it sets up. And I think any hierarchy is a bit obnoxious.
True, it's a hierarchy based on continual involvement and effort. But the results are an unequal playing field. Some people's votes are worth more than others, and ideas and good writing aren't valued in themselves, but depend on who speaks them.
