Critical reading

August 28th 2007 03:26
Is it a good idea to have the facility on your blog to change the rating system to encourage a more critical readership?

Maybe have ten categories with which to rate a post from one to ten.
(Like they mark figure skating - a technical score and a score for frills.)

With the added extra facility to add - spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors in your comment.

I'd find it beneficial to know if others thought i'd mucked up and where, and help others to do the same.

We could have the ten categories with which to rank the post along the lines of , information, creativity, lively writing, overall value...others...
Not sure exactly but something.

Anyway.
Thanks for the forum.

Not neccesarily any of this.

It's just I've never done one for the Forum.

It's all very exciting to finally get accepted for postage at this holy site.

Interesting idea Norm. Perhaps we could have it as an optional tab or something. I've put it on the list to have a look at.

If you could incorporate the function without losing the one-click system as well, it sounds like a beneficial function...

This question is kind of related and I didn't know where else I was meant to ask it:

With the karma system, when you vote for someone else's post, do they get points equal to their karma level or your own? Because whenever I vote, the number of points added always seems to be the same as my karma. But it should be the other way around shouldn't it?

Your karma score is made up of how much you support/vote/comment on other blogs, (yes?) so if someone votes for you, you should get points equal to your karma... therefore what goes around comes around.

Otherwise someone who doesn't support other people at all could still get 10 points in one vote if someone who DOES make the effort to support others gives them that vote. I might be wrong, but it seems at the moment the only time you get your own karma back is when you make a new post?

Just making sure I don't have the wrong end of the stick.

I would like an option where I could see where my readers think I screwed up, that would be good, but I dont understand the category thing at all.

Something like - you might give a post
5 laughing faces for humour
2 skulls for seriousness
3 quills for literary merit
4 brains for info
more - not sure
if this at all - has to be balanced -
giving a post ten just because I make a comment seems arbitrary - just me - maybe - who knows -not me

Michaelie - That's a good idea. At the moment the number of votes added is equal to the karma of the voter. This helps new writers with good content because it should attract comments from high karma writers and give the work good exposure.

I take your point though. Perhaps we could have the number of votes equal to the higher of the writers karma and the commenter/voter.

That makes more sense to me now. Perhaps if we did it the other way, it would provide more incentive for people to comment on the work of others, and therefore new writers should get a boost too?

Thanks for explaining,

Michaelie
