Comment Spam Filter

May 28th 2006 00:53
I think a comment spam filter would be really useful. I was trying to think about how you would do this and scott from punk blog and I came up with the following ideas:

1.) Anonymous posters cannot post URL's (or if they can they can only post 1 in each comment)

2.) Even registered posters can only post a restricted number of URL's per comment (2,3, 4, something like that)

3.) Anonymous posters can only comment a certain number of times per minute on each post

I'm sure a successful spam filter would need a bit more...does anyone have any ideas?

Alternatively, if you want me to check out spam filter techniques Jon then just drop me a line.

All good ideas Adam.

Same problem as always though -- I only have 1 programmer to implement these ideas and I have to prioritise.

For the moment I have someone checking every new post and comment to look for spam and offensive material.

If this becomes too expensive I will start looking at automated systems.

alternatively you could allow people to post what they want but the comment is only displayed once it has been okayed by the writer of the blog. It wouldnt take that much time to sort out the legitimate comments from the spam...

I like Matt's idea - at the very least we need to make it compulsory for unregistered users to put their name in - I'm getting an influx of not only spammers but also readers who are simply there to "flame" me and my posts.

What does everyone else think about the anon comments?

Are people getting many useful comments from non-registered users or should we insist that commentors are registered?

I like the idea of anon. users being able to comment, but in actuality I wonder whether it is worth the effort as I get very few useful comments.

Maybe it could be suspended for now and added back in when there is time to create a filter?

I love the idea of anonymous comments, as it allows random visitors to leave a comment.

I think Matt's idea is pretty good - that comments have to be approved.
