Channeling Current RSS Subscribers through Feedburner
August 13th 2007 06:00
Hi, Jon!
I'd like to channel my current RSS feed subscribers through Feedburner, so all my feed subscribers will be included in my Feedburner stats widget that I've displayed on my site. It's a bit embarassing to only have 1 subscriber listed in my widget, because my current RSS subscribers are not included in those stats!
To do this, I'll need to get a code snippet from Feedburner, which I am wondering whether you Orble techs could put into my Writer's Notes blog's source code to redirect the RSS feed through Feedburner. Hope this is something you won't mind doing.
Also, I'd really like to request that Orble institute a full RSS feed in the near future, which, I believe, would really cause our blogs' subscriber numbers to rise considerably.
I placed the Feedburner stats widget on my blog only a few days ago and had 2 subscribers yesterday; but, later in the day, that number went down to 1, which I suspect was due to the partial feed. I have one blogger/subscriber who normally unsubscribes from blogs with partial RSS feeds, and has told me that the only reason she hasn't done so from mine is because she really likes my blog. Many other readers are probably not as loyal as she is!
Thanks so much!

I think I'll need a whole team of developers to keep up with you
I would not mind providing a full feed as an option for the blogs. I'll have a look at this. It should not be too hard.
With regards to redirecting the RSS feed through feedburner -- I'll have a look at this though I'm not sure how easy it will be.
Regards,
Jon.

Hope I'm not being too much of a nuisance! There are just so many things I want to do to optimize my blog! (I actually have other questions about things I'd like to implement at Writer's Notes, as well, but didn't want to ask too many of them at one time!)
I appreciate your looking into the possibility of redirecting the RSS feed through Feedburner, as well as offering a full-RSS-feed option!
There is some tech info in the Feedburner forums about how to redirect the feed through Feedburner, if you run into any problems. (Of course, I don't really understand it, since it's aimed at you technical types.)
Thanks, again for your help!

Your feed URL is more than just your blog's URL. It's actually your blog's URL (beginning with "http://") followed by "/rss/summary.xml".
So, in other words, after the "http://www." you might have "Orble.com/happy-blogger/rss/ summary.xml".
Hope that helps!
Feedburner is fun, but my animated stat counter only animates once or twice when my blog is first loaded and then it stops, for some reason. It's a mystery to me!
Take care!

The whole way it works is you 'burn' a feed, and place the feed link it provides you in place of the link of your actual blog feed. You can't exactly change the link to the RSS feed on orble so you can't really use feedburner.

I think I can still use the feedburner but the trouble is I can only burn the feed summary not the whole blog itself. Am I right? Can you suggest anything? It will be a big help. Thanks.

Apparently you're burning a new feed, as you say, Ahmed; but it's one which people can subscribe to, if you put a button on your blog.
However, all the readers of your old feed will continue to use that one--at least until Jon figures out a way to redirect the traffic from the old feed to the new burned feed. I've heard of at least one other blog host that has managed to do this (though I've forgotten which one it is.)
Bernadette, at the moment, Orble only offers a partial, rather than a full feed. (Is that why they call it a "summary"? I'm not sure. But it would make sense.) Jon would be able to tell you.
Good luck with your feedburning!

You can't burn the whole blog because the RSS orble provides is a summary feed, feedburner can't go beyond that. Theres nothing actually wrong about a summary feed and it's probably better than a full feed.
Irrespective of that people have to subscribe to the feedburner feed, not the orble feed for you to actually make any use of it, hence there will have to be an option in the blog settings page to do this.
