Categories and stuff
January 29th 2007 12:03
Sorry if this is already a thread or something, but I was trying to modify my categories on one of my blogs and I added a category. But when I went to designate a post to that category it won't let me do it, it just shows that category in grey and it isn't clickable.
Have I done something wrong? Are there some new rules about categories or something that I've missed?
thanks

I am messing about with the categories at the moment, to provide a slightly more sophisticated categorisation system. Everything should still work though - I'll try to explain here what the new system is and what you need to do to use it.
So I guess you are talking about the new Frontline category you have added? You have created it as a Root Category rather than a Standard Category, the difference being that you cannot select a Root Category as the Category for a Post, but you can select a Standard Category as such. This is the problem you describe.
So - what is the reasoning behind this change? Well, imagine you have a Blog about Restaurants. The new system allows you to have a list of categories (and sub-categories) like:
> Style
> > European
> > > French
> > > Italian
> > > Etc
> > Oriental
> > > Chinese
> > > Japanese
> > > Etc
> Location
> > UK
> > > Manchester
> > > Etc
> > Australia
> > > Sydney
> > > > Paddington
> > > > Coogee Bay
> > > > Bondi Beach
> > > > Etc
> > > Melbourne
> > > Etc
You can select multiple categories for a single Post, so a French/Italian restaurant in Paddington would be in the French, Italian and Paddington categories.
Clearly Style and Location should never be set as the category for a Post since they describe other types of category - hence they are Root Categories, which cannot be selected when creating a new Post.
Soon you'll be able to use the categories to search Posts more cleverly - so a list of Posts about Italian restaurants in Bondi Beach will be located at:
http://www.my-restaurant-blog.com/italian/bondi-beach/
Anyway, this is all very helpful but how do you fix your new Frontline category? Easy:
- delete the Frontline category you have added
- select the Categories category
- click the Create Child Category link to create a sub-category
- name the new Category Frontline
So basically you are creating the new Frontline category NOT as a Root Category but as a Standard Category underneath the Categories Root Category.
Then you should be able to select this new Category when creating a new Post. You should also be able to select more than one Category for the same Post (eg - Doctor Who AND Movies) so when people look at the page:
http://www.cultfiction.com.au/doctor-who/movies/
This will show all Posts that are in BOTH the Doctor Who and Movies categories. Though please note - this functionality is not yet available - it will be soon though
Anyway, I hope that helps a bit and sorry for the rather lengthy and garbled response!

I too seem to have messed up with my categories. So much so that I cannot assign any category to my posts. Can you please have a look at my blog indusguru.com and suggest the course of action to correct this.
Thanks

I've had a look at your Blog and everything appears to be working correctly. I even created a test post using some of your categories and it worked fine.
The categories you have assigned will appear under the Post content and also in the side menu bar. Here are some links to the categories on your Blog:
Astrology
Vastu
Feng Shui
AstroVastu
I hope that helps? Let me know if you have any more problems.

NRL News
As another person who is a litle unsure about moving categories, I was after some advice. On my NRL News blog, I have created the following root categories - NRL Club News, NRL Results 2007 and NRL Tables 2007.
The last two categories will be utilised further in the season, but my main question is, can I move all my current NRL team categories under the new NRL club news root category, thus alleviating clutter and giving the blog a look of organisation.
Any Ideas?
Thanks heaps,
StephenP

You should be able to move these categories as you suggest using the new editing facility. For example, if you have a ROOT category 'A' with sub-categories 'A1' - 'A4' and a ROOT category 'B' the process to move all the sub-categories from 'A' to 'B' is as follows:
- Move 'A1' left so it becomes a ROOT category
- Move 'A2' left so it becomes a ROOT category
- Move 'A3' left so it becomes a ROOT category
- Move 'A4' left so it becomes a ROOT category
- Delete 'A'
- Move 'B' up so it is above 'A1'
- Move 'B' up so it is above 'A2'
- Move 'B' up so it is above 'A3'
- Move 'B' up so it is above 'A4'
- Move 'A4' right so it becomes a sub-category of 'B'
- Move 'A3' right so it becomes a sub-category of 'B'
- Move 'A2' right so it becomes a sub-category of 'B'
- Move 'A1' right so it becomes a sub-category of 'B'
- Re-order the sub-categories as required
That should be it
