Can You Redirect Traffic from My Old (Orble) Domain to My New Domain?
August 30th 2007 00:51
Jon,
Would it be possible for you to redirect the traffic from my old Writer's Notes blog to my new WritersNotes.Net domain, so I can finally delete my old blog? I've been hesitant to delete it because I still get a few stragglers going to that IP address looking for my blog. (I've noticed that there are still listings in Google Search with links to the old domain, which is probably why a few people still look for me there.)
I'm beginning to wonder, though, with the new Google Update imminent, whether Google might penalize me for having "mirror sites" if I don't delete the old blog before the update. Since the iWebtool Page Rank Predictor indicates that my Google Page Rank will likely go from 0 to about 5 this time around (based on the number of backlinks to my blog), I'm a bit concerned about the possibility of having Google decide to knock it down a few notches because of the duplicate sites.
Thanks!
Jeanne
P.S. Forgot to mention another important thing that Google could possibly penalize me for: I just plugged my URL into WebsiteGrader, and also Xinu, and both tools said that no RSS feeds were detected on my blog! That's very strange, since I have two: my regular feed and my Feedburner feed. Would you mind looking into this to see if you can figure out why these tools aren't finding my feeds? I wouldn't want Google to miss them! They certainly are there, because both have subscribers. (I know that Whois has been reporting for a while that parts of my site aren't indexable by search engines. Could these be the parts?) Thanks again!

I never thought of that; though, as I mentioned, I have seen the old URL listed in Google Search results since changing domains. Also, I think I've seen as many as 6 or so hits to the old blog in a single day, if I recall correctly. Would that many be attributable to the Googlebot?
I certainly hope that most of the hits I get to the new domain aren't crawler-related, since I've had around 100 unique readers a day lately--or pretty close to it-- and several times that number of actual hits. And, yesterday, when my post got Stumbled, I had 176 unique readers and close to 700 hits. (We certainly know that those unique readers, at least, weren't the Googlebot!)
Thanks for responding!
Jeanne

I think you have deleted all your old posts already. I agree we do need a redirect facility though. I thought I had created one already though it only seems to work for redirecting from one domain blog to another. It's on my list to fix.
Jon.

I , too, thought it strange that neither diagnostic tool detected my feeds. They're obviously active.
Do you think I should delete my old blog now, or wait? You're right that I have deleted all the old posts. I've just left one post on the old blog containing a link to the new domain.
Thanks!
Jeanne

Getting your post stumbled, well it probably means you're getting human readers, which is always a good thing.

You should remove it from underneath your posting image though. You can do this by going to it's Setting page and under the section Posting Image Link choose NO.

Writer's Notes
Didn't know I could remove Writer's Notes from beneath my posting image, so thanks for that info, as I have been thinking about how odd it must look to see Writer's Notes listed twice under my photo!
About the hits the old site has been receiving: Today's stats e-mail showed 14 hits, 6 individual readers, and 2 link readers. That obviously means that at least two live people clicked a link on that page--I'm guessing probably the link to my new domain (though, of course, it could have been an Adsense ad).
By the way, I got Stumbled again, and had 202 individual readers over the last 24 hours! What a great feeling for a fairly new blogger! Almost made it into the Orble Top 50 Blogs by Individual Readers, in fact--only out by 2! (Also had 778 hits. And 128 link readers! Too bad none of those link readers clicked on Adsense ads! Yesterday's Adsense take was a whopping $.14 (possibly from one of the clicks on the old blog), but so far today, it's $.00! Oh, well! That's life, I guess!)
Now, I'm off to remove the old Writer's Notes from underneath my posting image!
Thanks again!
