Anonymous Comments
May 24th 2007 23:17
Hey,
When people get to a post through Google, they leave sometimes Anonymous comments, which I find is pretty boring and bad.
But since "Anonymous" is default in the name-section of the comments by people not signed in, it's the easiest way to take.
I would prefer to have that space empty and leave it to each and everyone to choose whether they'd like to write a name or be Anonymous.
Also, it would be helpful to be able to edit all comments as an admin of the blog.
Thanks,
peeker

Editing other people's comments is a little trickier. It means that you can basically alter what someone has said and mis-represent them.
You do have the option to delete any comments on your blog.

Thanks, sounds good.
To edit is practical, because you don't have to delete a comment because of something they wrote. You just edit the comment, delete the sentence that has (awful language, hater's comments, other bad stuff) and replace it with something like "please keep this conversation mature", or "no hate, thank you".
To delete those comments feels wrong (unless the whole comment is shit).
You get the idea...
Thanks,

I don't see whats wrong with haters comments, they inspire 'discussin' and ultimately blog traffic.
You'd be surprised, blogs that average 10,000 hits a day have comment sections filled with nothing but hate, it's like an inevitability the bigger your blog is (and depending on the subject too).

I mean that all comments are editable, not just anonymous. If that's what you're saying...
Yes, but for instance attacking other people is not ok. In discussion it's ok to disagree, but not hate.
It might be harder with more visitors, believe me I've had to delete few already, but there's a limit. I would like as an admin to be in charge of my blog's limit, which is not set low, but shouldn't be inexistent either.
Thanks for you thoughts,
peeker

Don't edit peoples comments, they won't appreciate that and it will only spur more hate and resentment. Just delete them and be on your way.

I could put up with a lot of hate and personal attacks for 10 000 hits! Its only text mate!

The function should exist, then if you want to use it is up to you.

Of course they can't control all, but if a comment gets reported by another user, the admins sometimes edit it.

But common sense dictates that a comments editing feature would be abused to hell and back.

My solution? I threatened to delete them both. Never a single bad word after that. Maybe just state some page rules, like this or that wont be tolerated, then, if people break the rules, kick em. I wouldnt like to see a world where comments could be edited....As Jon says, your opening up a can of worms where people can be misrepresented and thats pretty serious.

But seriously... editing comments just isn't worth the trouble it'd bring. If you don't like it, delete it. If it was a valid comment or whatever, ask the poster to re-post, without whatever it was that warranted deletion.

Since I basically can't stand the general public, I didn't want them coming in and multiplying the moronic quotient of my blogs. However -- that probably does generate talk, and therefore hits, and therefore revenue.
I may need to reconsider...

I'm just saying, the edit-function should exist. Then if you want to use it in a bad way, it's up to you. A blog is personal enough for each and everyone to decide what they want to allow or do with different functions of it.
Thanks for all the brain storming though.
